San José State University is hosting its first-ever First-Gen Week Celebration, a three-day event dedicated to celebrating and empowering first-generation students.

Tyler Yuen Explores Europa (From a Distance)

When NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft launched on October 14, it began its long journey to Europa, one of Jupiter’s icy moons. During its travels, it will traverse 1.8 billion miles as part of the first NASA mission dedicated to studying an ocean world beyond Earth.

    SJSU Associate Professor of Photography Binh Danh, ’02 BFA Photography, says that visiting national parks is especially meaningful to him as a Vietnamese American artist. Much of his recent work involves using 19th century daguerreotypes, a photographic process that involves creating images on silver plates, to capture iconic images of Yosemite or the Grand Canyon.

    “For the viewer to see themselves with these great American landscapes, it brings up questions of identity, history and even nationalism,” he says, adding that visiting and experiencing national parks as a first-generation American helps him feel rooted in a sense of home. Daguerreotypes allow him to introduce places like Yosemite to fellow immigrants who may have a hard time picturing themselves in national parks, perhaps because they didn’t yet feel like the U.S. was “home.”

    Interested in renewable energy? So are we! SJSU is delighted to announce our participation in the California Solar Canal Initiative, a research consortium of faculty from seven top California research universities aiming to tackle the problem of renewable energy by installing solar panels over water canals to reduce evaporation and generate clean energy.

    SJSU’s contributions will be led by Dustin Mulvaney, professor of environmental studies.

    “Our involvement in the project shows that our students and faculty are quickly becoming leaders in promoting the sustainability of energy and water systems to integrated sectors that are crucial to addressing climate change and human prosperity in California,” says Mulvaney, who initially wrote about solar canals as a “win-win” techno-ecological synergy in a paper in Nature Sustainability” in 2019.

    “Photography is about recording the past because you want someone in the future to remember it,” says SJSU Associate Professor of Photography Binh Danh, ’02 BFA Photography. “But for me, it’s also about the present moment, especially when you see yourself reflected back in a picture. As a result of the interesting negotiation between time and space within the photographic medium, you’re also projecting into the future.”

    Caitlin Pambid, ’23 Anthropology, winner of the 2024 CSU Student Research Competition, developed her undergraduate research project while enrolled in the SJSU Humanities Honors program. The program, now in its 70th year, has been recently streamlined to offer Spartans of all majors the chance to immerse themselves in the arts, humanities, oral communications and critical thinking skills.

    “Our professors in the humanities honors program and their assignments encouraged us to cross reference ideas from different subjects, especially the intersection of religion with art, history with philosophy, philosophy with music, political science with English literature, etc.,” says Pambid, who now works at a museum. “My ability to synthesize makes me an asset in my current internship at the historical museum because I am able to offer a big-picture understanding of what’s being interpreted with some nuance.”

    On March 11, three members of SJSU’s College of Humanities and the Arts participated in National Humanities Advocacy Day in Washington D.C., representing not just SJSU, but the entire California State University system.

    Philosophy Professor Janet Stemwedel describes meeting with California Senators’ legislative staff in a packed conference room.

    “We had a tight five minutes, with Dean Shannon Miller describing the economic impact SJSU has in Santa Clara County, Silicon Valley, the Bay Area and the entire state, then passing to Kathy Harris, the director of public programming for the College of Humanities and the Arts, to talk about how the federally funded NEH supports our programming while also helping us attract state and private funds,” she says. “Then it was my turn to talk about the impact of humanities in a classroom of STEM majors, helping them understand the ethical landscape of scientific knowledge-building careers and how to navigate that landscape.”

    “I always wanted to explore space,” says Cesar Meza, a Skyline College student who transferred to SJSU in fall 2024. “I always wanted to see if there's life beyond Earth.”

    So when he got the opportunity to apply for NASA’s ASPIRE internship program, which pairs students with NASA mentors for exo- and astrobiology projects, he thought, “I'll chuck my hat in the ring and see what happens.”
